Surface water drainage and stormwater management are critical factors in safeguarding the health and surroundings of disaster survivors in emergencies. Effective surface water drainage is vital in emergencies in which the risk of flooding is high, as it addresses a fundamental need to avoid exacerbating the effects of the disaster. Under-investment in building and maintaining drains can trigger bigger disasters.
